About the artist

Cara Chiang, a second-year student at NUS Faculty of Law, focuses her research on uncovering the ephemeral beauty present in everyday life. Her goal is to inspire viewers to perceive seemingly "ordinary" circumstances with renewed perspectives and a deep appreciation for the inherent beauty within. She aims to capture the moments when individuals shed their socially isolated selves, revealing their inner worlds, embracing a new landscape of social opportunity.

Personal Statement

Ephemeral Underground is a collection of images that provides a glimpse into the raw and unfiltered aspects of human nature. Through several nights out with my friends in Singapore, I embarked on a photographic journey with the intention of immortalising individuals in their candid and authentic moments. These were the instances when their inhibitions were lowered, enabling their true selves to shine through the weight of societal expectations and responsibilities.

The decision to shoot on film adds intrigue to the series, reflecting the spontaneity of the creative process by embracing impermanence, and capturing the transitory nature of fleeting moments. By consciously abstaining from post-processing, I aim to preserve the purity and authenticity of each captured moment. This approach preserves the imperfections and nuanced details, giving distinctive character to each photograph. In a world inundated with filtered images and carefully curated narratives, these photographs offer a candid and genuine perspective. I seek to look for the beauty in vulnerability, to recognise the inherent complexity of human nature, and to appreciate the fleeting moments in life.
